Namibia: Man arrested over elephant tusks

A 71-YEAR-OLD man was arrested after allegedly being found in possession of four elephant tusks on Thursday.

According to the police, the man was arrested at Nonidas River Plots at Swakopmund.

It is alleged that the suspect attempted to sell the tusks to undercover police officers.

The police say the suspect was not in possession of a permit from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, authorising him to be in possession of the said items.

The suspect will appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court today.

In a separate incident, an Angolan national (48) was arrested in connection with being in possession of two pangolin skins.

The suspect was arrested at Siya village in the Kavango West region.

It is alleged that the suspect offered to sell the two pangolin skins to undercover police officers at a value of N$100 000.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Rundu Magistrate’s Court today.

Police investigations in both incidents continue.
